LED for walkway

hi,

i have idea of using led strips on walkway.

so basically, step in front of house door (straight line of sight 3 meters), motion detector detects , leds turn on white. step forward, 10-15 leds in front of steps change colour "guide" through walkway.

my problem is, don't know what's best way follow steps of person. have thought followings:
1- having pir sensors through walkway, maybe 10-15cm apart, when 1 detects in front of it, leds passed sensor turn on. issue is, if miss 1 of sensors not stepping in front of it?

2- ultrasound distance measurement distance of person door , changing leds.

i appreciate if has more ideas on how track movement of person down walkway?

most commercial pir sensors constructed (via optics , electronics) sense motion across field of view.
standing still in front not register continuous detection, entry , exit field of view detected.
