Confuse about how to tell what's updated...

with addition of boards manager, , new architecture managing core files zero, i'm confused how tell what's changed , where.  example, when 1.6.6 released, did need go boards manager , update core files, or core file changes included in 1.6.6 download?  core file changes documented in build release notes, or need elsewhere these kinds of changes.  how changes made libraries compatibility zero.  these documented?  also, if keep around old 1.6.5 release (to tests regressions), boards manager update core files used older version?  if so, how can check regressions in libraries, core files , 1 ide?  new architecture file management documented anyplace?
