Thread: Replacing Login Manager

hello!

first post on forum, please excuse me if posting in wrong place.

i'm researching image based authentication, , planning implement such system licentiate thesis. because want show such system have practical use, want change way ubuntu takes care of authentication.

because ubuntu open source, has beautiful interface, , massively popular, thought might worth try replace current login mechanism own system. impressive enough grade, useful enough don't consider time spent on development wasted, , importantly think enjoy process

understood stuff i've read, login ubuntu managed gdm, part of gnome, lot of other things well. want write program can handle login (local login, i'm not thinking remote stuff yet): can take username, show few sets of images, record users selections, check if form match users set of password images, , allow login if do, deny entry don't. , of course application users can added, passwords can changed, , other admin stuff can performed.

hope done:
system starts normal, gui appears, , in case of successful authentication, either steps besides these have been done original system, or gives control original system, can finish login process. want check user wants log in, , if know correct password, rest should stay same possible.

appreciate feedback in terms of:

- recommended bibliography
- advice or explication on is/are component/s have change
- links tutorials, websites consider helpful
- , acknowledgment on whether think project useful or not

sorry if let run long, wanted avoid looking don't know i'm asking

seems difficult task, same you'd licenciate thesis...

little know of gdm tells me seems rather monolythic piece of software "customizable" through themes , nothing more that. so, possibly, don't have plugin api work , you'll have change gdm's source or replace gdm display manager keeping gnome start up.

i'm not sure how gnome's start sequence is, maybe can find way start correctly own display manager. people use kdm start gnome because better (seems more customizable), has possible.
