cray xt5 supercomputer known "jaguar" has clawed way title of fastest computer in world.
sitting @ no. 2 on top500 list of supercomputers more year, jaguar overtook ibm's "roadrunner" according twice-yearly list unveiled tuesday @ sc09 conference in portland, ore., week.
jaguar beat out competition showing can process 1.75 petflop/s, or quadrillions of floating point operations per second, according top500 linpack benchmark. ibm's roadrunner pushed no. 2 posting processing speed of 1.04 petaflop/s, dip 1.105 petaflop/s reached in june 2009 test. slower performance time around apparently due repartitioning of system.
every 6 months when top500 list released threshold grab place on gets higher. slowest supercomputer (no. 500) on november's list posted speed of 20 teraflop/s, 17.1 teraflop/s of 6 months ago. in other words, slowest computer time around have been no. 336 in june.
kraken, cray xt5 system, jumped 2 places former no. 5 position posting processing performance speed of 832 teraflop/s. ibm's bluegene/p, forschungszentrum juelich in germany, came in @ no. 4 825.5 teraflop/s. @ no. 5 china's tianhe-1, highest ranking ever chinese supercomputer.
the top 10, while still dominated supercomputers housed in united states, had 1 newcomer. sandia national laboratories' "red sky," sun blade system posted linpack performance of 423 teraflop/s.
just last time list released, top500 list made of hewlett-packard , ibm computers. hp accounted 210 of year's 500, , ibm 185. in terms of processors in use, intel still enjoys lion's share, 80 percent. the popular operating system linux, 90 percent of top500.
here's top 10:

  • jaguar, cray, oak ridge national laboratory (1.75 petaflop/s)
  • roadrunner, ibm, los alamos national laboratory (1.04 petaflop/s)
  • kraken xt5, cray, national institute computational sciences (832 teraflop/s)
  • jugene, ibm, forschungszentrum juelich (825.5 teraflop/s)
  • tianhe-1, nudt, national supercomputer center in tianjin (563.1 teraflop/s)
  • pleiades, sgi, nasa ames research center (544.3 teraflop/s)
  • bluegenel, ibm, lawrence livermore national laboratory (478.2 teraflop/s)
  • bluegene/p, ibm, argonne national laboratory (458.61 teraflop/s)
  • ranger, sun, texas advanced computing center (433.20 teraflop/s)
  • red sky, sun, sandia national laboratories (423.9 teraflop/s)

bigger reason run linux.

wonder 1.75 petaflop/s supercomputer cost? better yet, fit in basement?
