line screen intended output resolution of raster dots per inch.

as press can print black ink on white paper, photographs (actually, tints of black) converted larger , smaller dots in regular pattern. dots ink area of around 50% of pattern square display 50% gray naked eye. use magnifiying glass on newspaper see in practice. might spot typical photograph printed raster lines in angle of 45 degrees.

so, line screen number of "lines" across picture. @ 150 lines per inch, each single dot 1/150" wide @ max. picture has 300 distinct gray values per inch, recommended overkill of 200%. lower dpi value, might see banding -- 'edges' of single pixels may become visible in repeated pattern across entire photograph.

a screen of 150 lines per inch considered "high quality". typical value book printing 120 lpi (and newspapers may go low 85 lpi). real art books go 180 lpi, , may need special equipment on paper.
