Stepping Down Increased Source Voltage

i have sensor comprising attiny85 mcu, hc -sr501 pir module , 433mhz transmitter.
the sensor powered 3xaaa batteries.

my objective reduce size.

one option considering powering sensor a23 12v battery.
the pir module , transmitter can both handle 12v supply.
the pir module outputs 3v (need double check).
the issue supply mcu.

questions...
1. simplest form of voltage step-down supply mcu.
2. better off, battery life perspective, supply mcu 5v or supply 5v via like this.

alternatively, suitable 12v tolerant mcu available/practical?

i have never heard of 12v mcu, might need consider battery lifetime. a23 cells have less energy capacity aaa cells, , 12v-5v step down converter waste energy, making problem worse.
