Discrete-event implementation at hardware level

hi,
i new in community , have no global view of existing projects , hardware capabilities.
i want know if possible not use central (discrete-time) clock @ hardware level rather discrete-events driving computations in arduino.
is there existing projects dealing subject? (i did not find any)

what sort of events, how , sort of computations done?
