Thread: non-empty directory appears as empty in nautilus

hello all,
had user reporting strange behavior on 64-bit 9.04 ubuntu box using gnome. there directory named /research/mike on computer, home directory of user. directory appears empty when viewing through nautilus, though filled sub directories , files.

here's i've done far:
checked make sure nautilus set show hidden files, is.
checked make sure had proper permissions see files in directory, does.
i've tried running nautilus root, directory still shows empty.
tried logging in myself (we both admins on box, same permissions), not see files while logged in myself.
tried viewing contents of directory in terminal, terminal shows files , folders.
had user mike log in (this folder home directory) , open directory through nautilus, sees files , folders.

has else had problem? far directory exhibits behavior, there 4 other users home directories visible. i've tried looking on forum , on google, couldn't find anything. appreciated.

just wondering if has ideas on one. i'm having user use thunar without incident, nice if use gnome though.
