Thread: Ubuntu 9.10 won't boot UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY

a few days after upgrading 9.10 turned on computer , the boot screen started filesystem check. crashed , following dos screen came up:

/dev/sda5 contains filesystem errors, check forced.
filesystem checks in progress (esc cancel)
/dev/sda5: inodes part of corrupted orphan linked list found
/dev/sda5: unexpected inconsistency; run fsck manually (ie: -a or -p options)
mountall: fsck/[427] terminated status 4
mountall: filesystem has errors: /
init: mountall main process (419) terminated status 3
mount of filesystem failed
maintenance shell started
ctrl d terminate shell & retry
root@ibm:~#_

if press ctrl d following comes up:

mountall start/starting
fsck util-linux-ng 2.16
/dev/sda5 contains filesystem errors. check forced
swapon: /dev/disk/by-uuid/f6100565-d920-4d6f-b253-b1bd2f5650ec: swapon failed: device or resource busy
mountall: swapon: /dev/disk/by-uuid/f6100565-d920-4d6f-b253-b1bd2f5650ec [793] terminated status 255
mountall: problem activating swap swapon: /dev/disk/by-uuid/f6100565-d920-4d6f-b253-b1bd2f5650ec
/dev/sda5: inodes part of corrupted orphan linked list found

mountall: filesystem has errors: /
init: mountall main process (786) terminated status 3

i'm hoping can somehow fix , business usual w/ working 9.10 setup. worst case scenario i'd save files, wipe partition , install fresh 9.10.

don't know how accomplish either of above direct or pointing me in right direction appreciated.

bump
