Thread: Migrating old accounts from Gutsy to Karmic

(apologies if or similar has been asked before search threw 1 similar sounding thread , suggested on thread started 1 of own).

although i've been using ubuntu while (since fiesty) i've never done (other use "out box" were), apologies if these appear newbie questions.

basics:

1x 80gb hd 40gb gutsy gibbon partition 2 user accounts (my own , wife's) + 40gb xp partition

1x 'spare' 80gb hd

2x 'spare' 40gb hds

plan:

upgrade gutsy gibbon karmic koala , give 80gb hd of own (and give xp partition (a disk infact) 80gb of own)

plan on using copy of acronis true image back-up 2 40gb images of current 80gb hd on 2 40gb hds

install karmic on 'spare' 80gb hd , copy want off original 40gb gutsy partition (now copied separate 40gb hd can expand original xp full 80gb of original 80gb disk (the of xp on other 40gb hd in case goes wrong!).

however, i'm on dodgy ground , help:

/home - if copy /home dir gutsy disk new karmic disk (by slaving , booting both insitu (grub?) enough restore local files , settings (it used in same machine settings should ok (shouldn't they?!) i.e. docs, music, photos videos, emails (i use evolution) , firefox settings (and of wife).

if 'yes' that's , half battle! if 'no' or 'sort of' need do? second part of query i've installed quite few apps (as has wife) - games, openoffice, vlc, gimp , loads of stuff can't recall @ moment! secondary question is: live - , can moved without being reinstalled? (i don't mind upgrading once they've moved - stuff (such vlc) doesn't seem upgrade under gutsy anymore (but that's different noob question day).

in end i'm hoping have 1x80gb hd karmic on it, old gutsy files , settings , apps , 1x80gb hd xp on it, using grub (??) select between 2 disks rather current state of affairs - 2 partitions of same hd.

can start 'playing' karmic , catch on how ubuntu has moved on since 7.10!

appreciated - because if break - better half throttle me!

to upgrade gutsy gibbon karmic koala
you need clean install. gutsy no longer supported. clean install wipe out data on partition installed to. back upall of data first.
