16x2 LCD will not show backlight through conventional ways

i've got lcd screen: 16x2, 1602a qapass.

the sketch i'm using hello world (and plethora of others in attempt make lcd light up)

i've been fighting lcd light per tutorial outlined.  connect wire 5v arduino's lights go out. i've been trying countless of other tutorials, tried adding pen or 220k resistor both. nothing.

it wasn't until came across random google image used 3 wires connected side of lcd did backlight turn on. but, method doesn't work since want show data on lcd.

i have connected power supply arduino. arduino lights still turn off.

why happening? heck can do?

what heck can do?
start by:

  • specifying lcd have including link it's datasheet.
  • specify tutorial attempting follow.
  • provide photograph of setup.  we must able unambiguously follow each wire 1 end other.
  • provide copy , paste version of sketch set off 'code' tags.
  • verify understand getting backlight function totally separate operation getting characters displayed on screen.

if lights on arduino turn off when connect display may have power connections display reversed.  there few displays functions of pins 1 , 2 reversed.
