Multi-Column Layout Methods

i have cs3 (id 5.0.2) on xp sp2.

i have 80 page layout trying efficiently manage in indesign.

it visually consists of 3 column's: middle column contains text, left column contains headings , right column contains boxed cross references other sections. each section visually divided previous horizontal line spans width of page.

initially, placed body text between 2 guides in middle , manually placed section titles on left, dividing lines above section breaks , cross reference boxes on right. however, when text expanded in revision, had manually move of headings, dividing lines , graphics down , manually realign, pain.

i tested using 3 column table , turn off strokes except borders separating sections. each section broken out own table cell (or multiple cells longer sections). big hurdle rows in indesign tables not break across pages, if section or paragraph long, force entire row onto next page, leaving lot of white space.

so started playing anchored objects. these seem work in objects float , down text moves, struggling initial placed objects consistently align starting positions (it took lot of dropping down guides, moving text , objects , killing guides). playing x , y offsets seem work counter expect. there trick replicating process multiple section headings , dividing lines throughout 80 page layout?

thanks advice.
