Control 8 stepper motors to build a Cable Robot

i building cable robot ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yebulhbcjm )
i need control 8 motors. start small nema17 stepper motors, in future extend stronger ones such nema42, , maybe larger servo motors later on.

im looking practical advice on hardware use (not arduino) can control number of motors. also, id advice on different hardware parts needed project (besides main board , motors)

my experience electrical boards building reprap printer (which know can control 5 motors)

1.serial parallel shift register.
2. 8 motor drivers compaitable nema motors (assuming pololu a4988s do).
