Messaging for Home Automation Project - Raspberry Pi Forums


hi all,

i've looked on forum , haven't found messaging between smartphone , raspberry pi. i'm doing, , i'm sure lots of others here doing, basic home monitoring , control. goal reliably receive notifications on android phone , wife's iphone in realtime. messaging should work sending commands pi well. messages should run through remote server , relatively secure. has accomplished high reliability , documented it? sitting right in front of me , i'm not seeing because i'm searching wrong terms, if not, let's put our heads , come something! :idea: i'm newbie , amateur programmer i'll helpful can.

have far:

in garage- raspberry pi 3, magnetic sensors on garage doors, dht11 monitor temperature, , bank of relays turn on heat , operate garage doors.
wrote little python utility act remotely controlled thermostat heater, monitor whether garage doors open or closed, open , close doors, , calculate approximately how natural gas heater using based on amount of time runs. messaging backbone of pi side sleek xmpp library.

on phone- threw android app using smack xmpp library. want me doesn't seem best way , doesn't stay connected. there out there that's more modern xmpp , tailored iot "things" , mobile device communication? i've looked @ google's firebase cloud messaging, xmpp-based, though has better , reliable android/ios libraries. nothing python though? https://firebase.google.com/docs/cloud-messaging/

i'm surprised no 1 interested in topic! maybe posted in wrong category? imagine there lots of rpi newbies me out there want able communicate pi in real-time while on go.
