Serial Read and Write Data

i wanted know possible read data types serial interface, when user enters something. in project, want tell program pick object, enter number defined location of product on shelf. project pick , place machine.

it possible read data, need know format data in. in general, flexible means of communication send , receive text. reading , writing binary data more compact, both ends need know binary data being sent, , order data in (is 2 bytes int, in big endian order, or 4 bytes float). dealing lost byte in binary mode more challenging dealing lost byte in text mode.
