after checking various forum posts on how skype work webcam in linux, homemade drivers, , like, have been able , minimal downloading of applications.
hardware:
hp pavilion ze5400 laptop (about 6-8 yrs old, linux experimental machine)
gigaware 25-496 webcam ($40 @ radio shack)
assumes you've downloaded skype linux , installed (this done beta v. 2.1.0.47)
steps:
make sure audio input set. i'm using pulseaudio came preloaded ubuntu, think. start "applications> soundand video >pulseaudio >input devices tab" , adjust mono slider bar middle, talk , see if little bar underneath registers sounds you're making.
start skype
right click on small green skype indicator in upper right corner date /sound indicators in gnome, go options>video devices. make sure "enable skype video" , "start video automatically when in call" selected. me there 1 selection available "select webcam" option.
check video functionality in skype using "test" window in dialog box.
close out of dialog box.
start skype applications>internet>skype or launcher.
test audio input using echo / sound test service.
notes:
able use "luvcview" application downloaded using synaptic package manager test functionality of webcam before stumbled onto skype "options > video > test" function described above.
quality of webcam better expected after seeing lots of posts folks having problems cams.
when starting skype, careful not multiple instances of application running. in upper right , make sure you've got 1 skype icon; if there's more one, right click , quit excess instances of application.
