Selection Tool and Text Font Size unable to select

hi have adobe indesign cs 4 installed, after formatting computer , reinstalling program, i've noticed selection tool unselectable once select else , way of using selection tool again using keyboard shortcut. happens font, when want select size of text wish use, won't let me select drop menu, instead can type in value, , when try select drop down menu acts if selected choose different fonts.

any suggestions?

i have far updated, installed admin access , turned off user control access on vista.

update 6.0.1 , trash preferences.
