i used love online game called, believe, joggle. scrabble, when played word got lit in colors, , if played word off letters changed colors , got steal of points you. , vice versa.
i'd love see physical version. don't know how i'd in cost-effective-ish manner. i'm picturing clear glass letter-tiles, leds in grid can illuminate in color, scoring, etc.
i don't think mount cameras inside reasonably sized boardgame , image recognition, see tiles on board. plus, if use frosted/diffused leds, i'm blocking own view. use overhead gambol, that's less "boardgamey" , more techy. know arduino's don't image processing, i'm assuming esp8266 can handle using ide.
rfid's obvious solution, that's 100 tiny chips (not cheap) , either ton (225) of readers, or mechanical scanning. in 2012 made $30,000 scrabble board want hardware-wise, using rfid solution , carbon-fibre everything, etc. crazy overkill.
i'm trying wrap head around sort of resister-ladder , row/column scanning. need have continuous current when there's no tile down, , bypass when placed one.
i've stumbled across using rgb leds color sensors, option. dab of color on 3 sides of tiles, , rgb 27 combinations, covers letters. haven't seen other proof of concept though, , color-sensors pricey.
thoughts? other thoughts process?

an exciting problem :-)
one alternative barcode @ bottom of every tile, , barcode reader adjustable/moveable focus.
color encoding looks promising me, provided required circuitry can restricted useful degree.
major drawback of such solutions: light shining out of uncovered positions :-(
perhaps hall sensors , magnets of different orientation used encode letters, tiles must forced line accurately.
quite different approach: have ordered repository of letters, , track letters removed , placed position. or build robot puts tiles positions, can detect letter he's moving where.
