i doing research in neuroscience. have developed colleague novel methodology @ sleep , arousal in fruit fly. not @ immobility duration - has been done on last decade field - responsiveness mechanical stimulations. hope accomplish paradigm shift our new methodology.
our methodology has been published (http://www.nature.com/articles/srep08454) , created dedicated website explaining how works (http://web.qbi.uq.edu.au/dart/).
technically controlling our software 2 motors dac device, usb-1208-ls measurement computer. independently control more motors (in dreams, 40! technically 40 outputs) can individually wake flies.
however, haven't found digital analog converter allow me freedom. hope correct topic.

one dac output per motor.
you can multiple channel dac 1 chip can control couple motors.
the beauty of arduino create 8 channel unit example, make 5 duplicate units 40 channels.
you did not offer if needed 10 bit or 16 bit resolution
and dac using impossible offer solution, ideas.
if want control more 1 ardino, can connect them 1 of available serial busses, depending on chip selection , speed of response needs.
