MAking text fields required using JavaScript

i have several radio button groups where, if 1 of buttoms selected, text box becomes visible. kame these text boxes required. brand new @ , took me several days figure out in order make presence = "visible" work had save form xdp file. way behind on project. can tell me how make these text boxes required?

what mean required? "required" means field must filled out before form submitted, mean?
