problem
a number of acrobat users under windows 2000 have reported problem in printing via postscript driver fails when printing "to file" instead of standard printer port (such lpt, usb, tcp/ip port, or acrobat's internal port). printing "to file" refers ability check option in programs such framemaker or microsoft word causes postscript have gone "real" printer port, go specified file name, prompted driver or application itself. symptom of failure may either (1) no file produced and/or (2) nondescript error message "unable print."
although have not yet heard of problem occurring under windows xp, have no reason believe couldn't given extreme similarity in architecture , software components. if seeing windows xp, please advise me of via email , substitute "windows xp" "windows 2000" purposes in posting.
cause
the problem caused missing printing port named "file:" used driver whenever it, guess what, prints "to file." port automatically created when windows 2000 installed , never disappear. seems happening, based upon reports have received several end users, under conditions yet unidentified, uninstalling 1 version of acrobat in preparation installation of (newer) version of acrobat causes "file:" port deleted system. printing port deletion not appear caused end-user error.
adobe's acrobat quality assurance group has been alerted problem, date has been unable internally reproduce problem. appreciate information user encounters problem in terms of how acrobat distiller printer instance being used prior uninstall of acrobat (for example, printing framemaker book "to file"
acrobat distiller printer instance purposes of subsequently distilling whole book manually?)
fix
fortunately, easy add "file:" port operating system:
(1) logon windows 2000 user administrator privileges.
(2) go start=>settings=>printers.
(3) select file=>server properties.
(4) click "ports" tab.
(5) click "add port".
(6) select "local port" , click "new port".
(7) in response "enter port name:" respond "file:" (without surrounding quote marks, of course) , click ok.
(8) "file:" port should in list of available ports. may close remaining dialogs.
at point, printing "to file" should work correctly. likely, not see problem reoccur unless round of uninstalls of acrobat.
