How to iterate over a forms image fields

i have form built in designer allowing users upload multiple images. number varies , fields implemented via subforms. first question....

1. image fields mapped in workflow ? document variables ?
2. how iterate on lists of items such in subforms

re: image fields mapped to: haven't worked image fields, can won't automatically mapped document variables. suspect image stored in sort of hex encoded format xml document.

re: iterating on form items. it's quite difficult iterate on form items. want these images? store them in database or in series of files?
