Linked Images in ID CS3

just upgraded cs3, working on past document, linked graphics. .ai files seem break links every time go off focus of id. .jpg , .bmp holding links fine, wondered if there different in cs3? specific icon being shown each time missing-link question mark. no images have been moved/changed. if switch read email , go back, breaks.
