Thread: Application windows - no title bar - can't move

i'd resolving weirdness - please!

when start ubuntu 9.10 get:
1 - normal appearing desktop on first workspace

2 - cannot change workplace either [ctrl][alt][any arrow] or clicking on switcher

3 - @ point window opens in abnormal state:
windows open in upper left hand corner of screen covering panel

window title bar missing = no window title = no "min" "max" "close" buttons = cannot move window either mouse or right click choice = no normal right click on title bar responses = [alt]f4 won't close window

contents of window seem work ok - mail - internet ...

if show desktop button pressed window opens saying either no window manager loaded or window manager doesn't support button. window manager metacity far know.

4 - system->preferences->appearance - [visual effects tab] shows no desktop effects selected tho enabled @ shut-down

click normal radio button - window opens "searching available drivers" - after best part of minute display "changes" , window opens asking if want keep these settings - choose "yes"
while looks did - can change other workspaces - switcher preferences allows selection of rows , columns - windows open next panel not on - window title bars normal - windows can moved ...

5 - if proprietary nvidia driver removed same things happen - difference no desktop effects allowed.

kernel 2.6.31-14 gnome 2.28.1 fresh install
amd athlon(tm) xp 3200+ - 1 gb ram
nvidia geforce2 mx/mx 400 nvidia linux x86 kernel module 96.43.13 loaded driver thru kk menu choice after installation - driver recommended nvidia
root partition ~14gb 27% used home partition ~95 gb 73% used

since not sure window manager running, can alt f2 , type
