help with a left right sensor

im working on air hockey table project human player playing against , automatic machine player.
i need way machine player know if object advancing towords machine player on left side of automatic player or right side.

i need way information lots of times, few times per second automatic player know side needs move to, in order hit object.

any ideas on which  sensors can use , how in order so?

you try pair of ultrasonic range sensors suspect amount of false reflection off horizontal surface , surrounds may make difficult.


the obvious way of using camera , image-processing software needs more computational power arduino can provide.
